Mentorship program offered for organic farmers
A new mentorship program is helping farmers transition into organic production and paying them for their efforts.
Katie Brandt with Michigan State University tells Brownfield young and beginning farmers are highly interested in working with mentors.
“Farmers often learn best from other farmers, whether it’s visiting their farms, having a mentor, hearing them as a guest speaker, or if they’re at a workshop because then they can really hear the story from the ground,” she says.
Brandt says she expects the connections to improve the success rate of transitioning and mentors to benefit from more than just a stipend.
“Mentors who are able to work with new and transitioning farmers are really inspired by that experience,” she shares.
