Debt ceiling negotiations continue

May 10, 2023 By Carah Hart Filed Under: Ag Policy, News

An ag lobbyist says debt ceiling discussions continue to take the oxygen out of the room in Washington D.C.

President Joe Biden met with Congressional leaders on Tuesday to negotiate and will meet again on Friday.

Tom Sell with Combest, Sell and Associates says the path forward to raise the debt ceiling still includes updates to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

“To try and curb the amount of time or what would be required of able-bodied adults without dependents,” he says. “There is a provision now saying people should be at least volunteering a few hours a week or month or at least be looking for jobs.”

Sell says he is optimistic a deal can be reached and the solution will create a smooth path forward so a farm bill can move through Congress.
