Busy week for Wisconsin farmers

September 18, 2023 By Mark Dorenkamp Filed Under: Crops, Harvest, News, Wisconsin

Dry conditions allowed Wisconsin farmers to continue chopping corn, cut hay, and seed winter wheat.

USDA’s latest weekly crop update says corn for silage harvest is nearly 40 percent complete, a week faster than a year ago and one day ahead of the five-year average.

Thirty-two percent of corn has reached maturity with 51 percent in good to excellent condition.

Soybean coloring is at 72 percent as of Sunday, with 29 percent dropping leaves.  Both are on par with the average pace.

The oat harvest is nearly complete, 53 percent of the potato crop has been harvested, and winter wheat is about 30 percent planted.

The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay surpassed 80 percent last week, and pasture condition is 22 percent good to excellent.
